A Favorite Resilient Floor Material
Tire Veneer has many uses and design advantages. Tire Veneer is available in rolls or tiles.
Tire Veneer is probably the most popular resilient flooring material in use today. Tire Veneer comes from the automotive industry. It is based on what is called buffings, which are small granules of rubber that are removed from the old tire tread that is going to be retreaded. Thus, buffings are a by-product of a tire recycling effort and this by-product is then used to make Tire Veneer rolls and tiles. Rubber tires are made from SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber). Polyurethane is used to bind the rubber granules together into a strong but slightly porous material. The most basic and least expensive color of Tire Veneer is black. To add some visual interest to the black Tire Veneer, colored EPDM rubber is added to the black tire buffings before they are all bound together with polyurethane. The EPDM rubber is not recycled, which means that only the solid black Tire Veneer contains 100% post-consumer recycled rubber. EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. For colors, our standard is 20% EPDM so the material still contains a significantly high percentage of post-consumer content.
Tire Veneer is made in the USA. The dry rubber granules are blended with a polyurethane binder and then formed through a process of heat and pressure into 2 basic forms, block or cylinder. Blocks are about a square yard in size and several inches thick. Sheets are sliced off the top of the block in various thicknesses. This is a slower low-volume process but results in a perfectly flat sheet. The most cost-effective method of production is the cylinder. A cylinder is about 4 feet in diameter and 4 feet long. It is positioned against a peeling knife and the entire cylinder is peeled in one operation. A cylinder peeled into 6 mm (1/4″) sheet will yield 385 linear feet of Tire Veneer.
Finally, this versatile material is available in 13 standard colors, optional EPDM percentage variations and additives such as cork. Tire Veneer comes in 4-foot wide rolls and square cut and interlocking tiles.

6.4mm (1/4″) – 360 linear feet or 1,440 square feet
8.0mm (5/16″) – 270 linear feet or 1,080 square feet
9.5mm (3/8″) – 235 linear feet or 940 square feet
12.0mm (1/2″) – 170 linear feet or 680 square feet - Tire Veneer lengths other than what is shown above are available by quotation.
- Tire Veneer thicknesses of 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and 9mm are available by quotation.
Tire Veneer Tiles
Tire Veneer Tiles are cut from a block. The feedstock is black SBR rubber from tires and colored EPDM rubber bound together with polyurethane. Because these tiles are cut from a block, they lay perfectly flat. The coverage of a 36″ x 36″ square cut tile is 9 square feet. The coverage of an interlocking rubber tile is 8.4 square feet because half of the tabs and slots are not counted. They are available in thicknesses of 6.4mm, 8mm & 9.5mm. Tire Veneer tiles, when glued down, or loose-laid for the interlocking, will provide a durable and economical floor covering, that wears well and will look good for years.
