Today is Easter Sunday. As many people celebrate the renewal of life in Spring as trees and flowers bloom, bird eggs are laid and baby animals are born, many people also celebrate the religious holiday of Easter. Today, we are happy there are growing numbers of white people who reject racism and the aggressions of white supremacy that harm their fellow citizens.
Racism is as old as humanity but that is no excuse in today’s modern society. This is especially true in the United States of America whose founding documents state:
In the Declaration of Independence – “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
In the Preamble to the United States Constitution – “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Let us not forget the white European injustices that have been perpetrated against Native Americans, both north and south after 1492 and which continues in the United States to this day. And let us not forget that Hispanic people are also Native Americans who continue to receive ill-treatment from a white supremacist United States government.
Let us remember the white European cruelties toward Black Africans who were condemned to slavery in America in the 1600s and who are still deprived of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness in the United States to this day.
Let us remember the Asian Americans who were brought to the United States by white Americans of European descent in the 1800s for labor, who have been cheated, discriminated against and murdered in the United States of America made blatant today.
Let us remember all of the people of Mid-Eastern descent, whether Muslim or Jewish, who have faced deadly discrimination since they first came to this nation founded on the principle of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
We surely cannot forget that Women in the United States have always been marginalized by the white male ruling class. Whether it was their right to vote, right to work, right to an equal wage, right to control their bodies, it is white men who obstruct their path to fully realize that while all men are created equal, this should include women too. All are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.
And finally, let us not overlook all of the people who are not capable of adhering to dominant heterosexual behavior. If they could only realize the astounding contributions made by these individuals, members of our society. Think of the Englishman, Alan Turing, considered the founder of the modern computer which you are using right now and the pressures against his sexual expression.
As the numbers of white people become more tolerant, they also denounce racism and white supremacy. Thankfully the United States of America is finally coming around to attempting that more perfect Union. We still have a long hard road ahead. There will be more cruelty and senseless killings for caring people to bear but I think ultimately the tolerant people will prevail.
We still remain at risk from white male-dominated industry which produces an overabundance of harmful chemicals, weapons of all types and damages our climate. Maybe, it will be all of the marginalized people in the United States of America who ultimately save humanity from self-destruction.
