The Big Lie

I have been wanting to write about this subject for years now and I find an excellent explanation on the NPR website - https://www.npr.org/2022/08/23/1117993012/january-6th-hearings-race - by: SANDHYA DIRKS August 23, 20225:23 AM ET At the Jan. 6 hearings, race isn't discussed much. Still, it's a central issue Rep. Bennie Thompson, chair of the Jan. 6 Committee, speaks virtually during a hearing on July 21. Bloomberg via Getty Images In the opening moments of the Jan. 6 Committee hearings, Chairman Bennie Thompson drew a line across history, connecting the Lost Cause to the Big Lie. "I'm from a part of the country where people justify the actions of slavery, the Ku Klux Klan and lynching," Thompson began. "I'm reminded of that dark history as I hear voices today try and justify the…

To: Webmaster Name: Eric Banks Email: ebanks@policebrutalitycenter.org Subject: Racial Profiling by the Police Resource Suggestion Message: Hi there, My name is Eric Banks. I came across the helpful resources you shared at yemmhart.com/wordpress/financial-literacy-in-the-black-community and was wondering if you were open to adding a new resource to that page. I work for an organization called Police Brutality Center. As we know, it's an unfortunate truth about the racial profiling by some members of the police that put minorities in dangerous situations sometimes that can result in horrible scenarios. Our mission is to provide help and support for these people and we can also answer any questions or offer guidance for those affected or their families. Check out our advocacy site below: Police Brutality Center - policebrutalitycenter.org What's important to us is providing resources and help for…

To make it easier we created a free in-depth guide with a list of some of the…

A Flirtation with Multiracial Democracy?

“The question we’re really facing is, was the last 50 to 60 years after the Civil Rights Act just a mere flirtation that the United States had with a multiracial democracy that we will then decide was inconvenient for those in power? And we will revert to what we had before?” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/feb/15/aoc-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-democracy Richard Luscombe @richlusc Tue 15 Feb 2022 09.12 EST

Why We Cannot Reach Them

From The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/nov/20/how-do-you-argue-with-anti-vaxxers-who-believe-theyre-on-a-noble-mission#comments This is one of the best comments and I think it applies to more than just the anti-vaxxers- undercoverguyzer 19 Nov 2021 20:00 42 One interesting pattern in a social research field I've been involved in is that the tendency to get more involved in alternative beliefs correlates with educational and demographic factors that are more complex than just 'lack of education'. You won't get much insight assuming all this just comes from ignorance. Some people who advance serious commitment to alternative theories in fields like health are more likely to work in semi-skilled areas and 'para-professions' than professions, and be somewhat educated but not to the highest levels. This leads to an active interest in knowledge, but with limited training in methodologies and exclusion…

1619 – CRT

Anyone that is interested in the history of slavery in the US should read Thomas Mann's epic book - "1493". The author documents a thoroughly researched and interesting history of the Jamestown settlement and the lethal competition between the Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, French and English in the New World. The work touches on the history of African cultures and explains how slavery impacted South and Central America. This book is about the "Columbian Exchange" - how the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus in 1492, changed the world. It is a fascinating read that offers many potential teaching opportunities.

Capitalism – Our End

Support the Guardian Available for everyone, funded by readers Our leaders look climate change in the eyes, and shrug Hamilton Nolan It is not good to be too pessimistic on the climate crisis. That said, it sure does seem like we’re screwed ‘Capitalism is a machine made to squeeze every last cent out of this planet until there is nothing left.’ Photograph: Xinhua/Rex/Shutterstock Wed 4 Aug 2021 06.12 EDT 951   If you have cultivated an Edgar Allen Poe-like appreciation for the macabre, there is a certain sort of amusement to be had in watching the developed world deal with the insistent onslaught of climate change. Like many horror stories, this one features a main character full of futile determination to maintain a sense of normalcy even as the ominous signs…

Black Mental Health Matters

https://www.sunshinebehavioralhealth.com/mental-health-issues-facing-the-black-community Subject: New Black Mental Health Matters Resource for Yemm & Hart Message: Friends from Yemm & Hart, Earlier today, I was checking your website for information on resources for the African American community when I found a list of helpful websites on your resource page: http://yemmhart.com/wordpress/how-to-be-anti-racist/ And I thought you might be interested in a guide that was created to discuss the impact of Racism and Discrimination on the Mental Health of our Black Communities. As you know, mental health is one of the vital issues facing the Black community in America. Sadly, given the racism and racial injustice African Americans have faced, it’s not surprising that they have become more susceptible to struggle with mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Unfortunately, just 1/3 of Black…
